In the bygone era by the name of Kanatal a lake used to exist which
dried up and hence the name Kanatal, which literally means "one eyed
lake" in Hindi came into exisitence. To make it memorable, the place
was named Kanatal.
Surkanda Devi is a temple in Kanatal, dedicated to Sati. According to
Hindu mythology Shiva brought the head of his wife Sati from Kankhal,
Haridwar after she burnt herself on his Trishul. Located at a height
of 9995 feet, you get a 360-degree view from the top of the temple.
This temple is 8 km on the road to Mussoorie to Kaddukhal. One has to
trek 2 km on foot to the little temple. Ponies are available.
The temperature of Kanatal is always noted between 10-20 degrees
Celsius during summer and 5-10 degrees Celsius during winter. The
location experiences heavy snowfall blocking roads in winters. Being a
high altitude zone, Kanatal frequently faces strong valley winds.
